Periodic car maintenance is required for everything to remain in order and safely. Many people find this practice unnecessary, but avoiding more serious and costly problems is essential. In addition, taking some care can prolong the life of many car parts. Check out the tips on what you should be aware of, turning to your mechanic when necessary.
1. Radiator Water
This maintenance can also be done by yourself and weekly but you can ask for help (ขอความช่วยเหลือ which is the term in Thai) from specialist in car servicing and maintenance. With the engine cold and the vehicle level, the water must be between the “Min” and “Max” indicated on the reservoir. The primary function of the radiator is to keep the engine cool. So, when checking that the water needs to be topped up frequently, take the car to a professional to avoid burning gaskets, spark plugs, puncturing pistons, or blowing the engine.
2. Spark Plugs
Responsible for moving the car, the spark plugs show signs that need to be changed: considerable increase in fuel consumption, difficulties in starting, and unregulated idle. The time between changes varies according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. In general, it should be done every 20,000/30,000 km. For factory turbocharged cars, it is recommended to check every 10,000 km.
3. Timing Belt
The timing belt or timing belt must be inspected by a professional in a mechanic shop, as a cover protects it. Check the manufacturer’s owner or dealer manual and follow the instructions faithfully. Generally, the change forecast is every 50,000 km.
4. Engine Oil
Check the level weekly. This procedure can be done at home. Before using the car for the first time of the day and on a level floor, remove the dipstick. It is necessary to clean it to measure the oil level correctly. Do this using a paper or cloth. After that, insert it again and be careful when removing it: the oil mark must be between the “Min” and “Max” marks on the dipstick.
